Setting
The setting of the novel is in city of Geneva, in Switzerland and around Europe in 1770s.
Major Characters
1. Victor Frankenstein
Description
He is a 17 year old genius man. He is a restless, curious, and hopeful person. He is very interested in science. He will forget to eat or anything if he does some experiments. He only has few friends because he doesn’t seem to feel the need for company. But after he gives life to the Monster, he becomes a vengeful and not responsible man.
2. Henri Clerval
Description
He is Victor’s best friend. He is a loyal and helpful friend. He not interested in business, but his father force him to be a merchant just like his father. He likes reading books and traveling.
3. The Monster
Description
He is nearly two meters tall, but his back is bent. He has yellow dry skin. The whites of his narrow eyes are red alike blood. Although he is like monster, he just has a baby mind. Actually he can be a good man, but after Victor and society reject him because of his horrible appearance, he becomes a bad man.
4. Elizabeth
Description
She is an Italian orphan girl that is adopted by Victor’s parents. She is pretty, nice and helpful woman. She is supposed to marry Victor because Victor’s parents want them to get married, more than that they love each other.
Summary
Victor Frankenstein is very interested in science. His family is also very rich. So, when Victor reaches the age of seventeen his father decides to send him to the University of Ingolstadt in Germany. After two years, Victor never send letter to his family. Therefore, his father decides to send Victor’s best friend, Henry Clerval, to visit him. When Henry visits Victor, he is very surprised, because Victor tries to make a man, he try to create life. Victor has already finished the body, that is really a perfect, beautiful and strong body of man, then he just needs the power of lightning to make the body alive. After he finish do that, the body alive and breathing, but the beauty of the body has gone with the lightning, it become very horrible body, look like a monster. Although it is very horrible, it just has a baby mind. After looking the Monster, Victor drives him out because the Monster makes him sick. The Monster goes out. They don’t know where he goes. After that, Henry finds the Monster live at the de Lacy’s house. He ask that family to tell the Monster that Victor has gone back home to Geneva. After three weeks, Henry find that the Monster burn the de Lacy in their house because the daughter of de Lacy want not to marry him.
Then, he receives news that Victor’s brother, William has been murdered by Justine, who in charge to look after him. But in fact it is the Monster who has killed him. The result is Justine is hanged by the people of the city. Victor is very sad, so he decides to kill the Monster. Then he meets the Monster at a mountain. The monster asks Victor to make a wife for him, because he is very sad with the rejection of many people. The Monster will kill Victor’s family if he doesn’t make it. So, Victor agrees to do that. After that Victor asks Elizabeth to marry him, Elizabeth decides that she will marry him. Before they get married, Victor begins to make a wife for the Monster. But, he doesn’t finish it because he afraid that the Monster will have children, it means there will be many monster in the world. The Monster is very angry, so he kidnap Elizabeth, he bring her to the highest point of a cliff. At last Victor and Henry can find him. There is a storm at that time, every few minutes the lightning strikes the Earth. Then, Victor fights with the Monster. Finally, Victor and the Monster are struck by lightning, than they die together. After a long time later, Henry and Elizabeth get married. They named their first son Victor.
What is the major conflict in the story?
The main conflict of this book is that Victor Frankenstein rejects the Monster and doesn’t take responsibility for what he has been done, so the Monster wants to make Victor suffer. The Monster is also rejected by society, so he feels alone, and then he hates all humans.
How does the story end?
-The Monster and Victor die because they are struck by lightning.
-Henry and Elizabeth get married. They named their first son Victor.
What is the theme of the book?
We must be responsible for everything we do.
Do you like the book? Why or Why not?
Yes, I do. Because this book is pretty scary; I like scary stories. This book has a dynamic storyline. So, I’m not bored to read this book.
